Puyallup is Filling with Pink Salmon

The basic set up I've been using on the Puyallup is a 1/2 oz cannon ball, 7'-9' leader line, one or two #12 corkies in red or orange/pink

We fish selectively on the pinks keeping only bigger and fresher. Sea lice are a must. We still scored good. We even went 1/2 on kings the biggest one got away.

Going pinking on the Puyallup

The pink salmon are in the Puyallup. They haven't massed but they are in. A few tips I have got are make your lead lines 6'-8' long, use 1/2 oz weight, and forget yarn use one or two #12 corkies above a 0/1 barbless hook. Use this color.

The fish are moving close to shore. The irony of this is I have found fishermen move the hog line right on top of the normal path of migrating fish so when you can hold the line in shallow water.

Spinners Strike

When the water is low and clear and the sun is bright break out the metal. Spinners have produced some nice fish this year.

These are pictures of two Cowlitz steelhead one 8lbs the other 13lbs. The bigger one was landed with the help of my younger brother. He reeled I coached.

Super Dipping Sauce

I took three of my family members to Brewster, WA for our first sockeye. Our guide Brad with Bobber Down Guide got all of us our fish. We also hooked a couple chinook but lost them our fault. One of his secrets is Sockeye flavor Super Dipping Sauce. The fish weren't big but they we're there and in force and they made a delicious meal.

This is his first salmon.

The biggest of the day

Bling Bang Summer Steelhead

The summer run is heating up and this is the time for metal. I decided that I would try to add a new weapon to my fishing spinners I have never landed a large fish using spinners before Saturday last week. I got to the Cowlitz river it was low and clear. No one had caught a fish all day. So I started to rummage through my tackle box and found a Pen-Tac spinner that a friend of mine gave me to try out two years ago. I grab my trout pole and start fishing. Ten minutes later bam I hook into this fourteen pounder.

I was more surprised than the fish. That Monday I tried the Cowlitz river again the conditions were exactly the same so out came the spinner and I got this ten pounder.

Just to make sure it wasn't a fluke I tried the same setup on the Skykomish and landed this 18lb chinook after a 30 minute battle.

(No salmon where killed in the making of this blog)
